Speaking to reporters following Monday night’s 104-101 loss in Toronto, Curry took a combative stance in the face of rumors linking Butler to Golden State and argued against the need for a “desperate” blockbuster trade — even for a player as skilled and multifaceted as Butler, a six-time All-Star who has asked the Miami Heat to trade him before next month’s deadline.
Curry, 36, is averaging 22.7 points per game this season, in addition to 6.1 assists and 5.1 rebounds. The four-time NBA champion is showing few signs of slowing down in the months since he signed a contract extension, but that has not prevented fans on social media from turning their backs on the Warriors’ franchise player.
The Golden State Warriors these days don’t bear much resemblance to the star-studded group that dominated the NBA between 2014 and 2022. That eight-year stretch saw Stephen Curry and the Warriors change the sport of basketball — utilizing smaller lineups and deadly three-point shooting, Golden State won the NBA Finals four times, with Curry, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green becoming household names around the United States.
But here in 2025, Thompson is playing his basketball in Dallas now as Curry and Green struggle to keep the Warriors afloat. After a shocking loss to the Toronto Raptors, Golden State’s record has slipped to 19-20, and the Dubs would miss the playoffs if the season ended today. Fortunately for the Warriors, there is more than half a season remaining — giving their front office time to take a big swing on a player like Jimmy Butler if they so choose.
For what it’s worth, it does appear as if the Warriors have checked in on Butler’s status as the 35-year-old star’s relationship with the Heat strains ever further amidst his suspension for conduct detrimental to the team. So while there exists fan frustration over Curry’s diplomatic comments, a team like Golden State always has the ability to make a splash.
