In California, food stamps are known as CalFresh, which is the same as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) in other states. It has the same mission of helping low-income families with financial support to purchase healthy food for their households.
The plan aims to improve access to nutritious meals and reduce food insecurity by distributing a monthly direct deposit via an Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) card, which can be used at participating grocery stores, with the usual restrictions.
It is not allowed to pay with the EBT card for hot prepared foods, vitamins, alcoholic beverages or non-food items such as pet food and household items, as well as tobacco, supplements and non-food staples.
