The soon-to-be 47th president, who will be sworn in on Monday, voiced interest in traveling to China within his first 100 days in office, the Wall Street Journal reported on Saturday, citing people familiar with the discussions.
In December, he vowed to issue an executive order imposing 25% tariffs on all US imports from China, Mexico, and Canada on his first day in office — further pledging to slap an additional 10% tariff on China for failing to curb illicit fentanyl exports.
“We discussed balancing Trade, Fentanyl, TikTok, and many other subjects,” the once and future president said.
Trump and Xi, through their representatives, have discussed meeting in person, with one option including the president-elect inviting the Chinese leader to the US, the outlet reported.
“President Xi and I will do everything possible to make the World more peaceful and safe.”
During his 2024 campaign, Trump called for a universal tariff of 10% to 20% on all imports into the United States from all countries — but threatened an import levy as high as 100% on BRICS alliance countries like Russia and China if they undermine the US dollar.
